The cracks within the New Togolese Commitment (NET), led by Gerry Taama, seem to be deepening following the recent decision to suspend a prominent member of the party. This decision comes in a context marked by internal disagreements exacerbated by the controversial vote on the modification of the Togolese constitution.
Warris Abdoul Tidjani, president of the Avé prefecture federation, was suspended for attending a meeting organized by the National Assembly, despite the boycott decreed by the NET. Furthermore, he granted interviews to the media, expressing a favorable view of the initiative discussed at the meeting. This action angered the party’s president, Gerry Taama, who made the decision to suspend Tidjani.
In an official statement, Taama stated that Tidjani would be called before the party’s disciplinary council to answer for his actions. This suspension comes at a critical moment, just hours before the start of the campaign for the legislative elections, requiring internal cohesion and strict adherence to the party’s directives.
This situation highlights the growing tensions within the NET and raises concerns about its ability to maintain unity and coherence as it prepares to face the challenges of the upcoming electoral deadlines. If appropriate measures are not taken to resolve these internal differences, the party risks compromising its long-term stability and political influence.
