A maritime tragedy struck the ship Déborah, flying the Togolese flag, last Tuesday around 11 am, when a sudden explosion rocked the ship as it was preparing to set sail. Captain Takoignadi Neyo, maritime prefect, in a statement released on March 14, provides more details on this incident.
According to the prefect, this explosion was quickly followed by a violent fire, plunging the crew into chaos and panic.
Immediately alerted, the Maritime Prefecture mobilized significant rescue efforts to try to save the crew and contain the devastating fire. Despite the efforts deployed, only two crew members were rescued, while two others are still missing. Authorities have launched intensive search and rescue operations to find the missing crew members.
According to preliminary information gathered from the ship’s captain, the explosion is said to have occurred when the ship’s engines were being started for departure. The exact circumstances of this tragic incident are yet to be determined.
The Prosecutor’s Office in Lomé has opened an investigation to shed light on the causes of this explosion and fire that have plunged the maritime community into shock. Maritime authorities are working closely with various stakeholders to successfully conduct this investigation and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Maritime Prefect, Captain of the ship TAKOUGNADI Nèyo, expressed deep gratitude to all administrations and rescue teams involved in the rescue operations, including defense and security forces, firefighters from the Autonomous Port of Lomé, the towing company BOLUDA, and the firefighters.
