Members of Parliament unanimously voted in favor of extending the state of emergency in the Savanes region. This decision comes in response to persistent terrorist threats in the country since November 2021.

Initially decreed by the President, Faure Gnassingbé, on June 13, 2022, for a duration of three months, the state of emergency in the Savanes region was already extended once for 12 months in April 2023, expiring on March 12, 2024 at midnight. Following a government request, MPs approved a new extension of 12 months.

This extension coincides with the organization of legislative and regional elections, giving the government the opportunity to maintain heightened vigilance and strengthen surveillance in the region to prevent any undesirable scenarios.

The state of emergency, an exceptional regime, allows for the implementation of exceptional measures to address serious dangers and unforeseen circumstances in a specific territory, for a set duration.
