Gerry Taama, president of the New Togolese Commitment (NET), faced harsh criticism after changing his position on the current constitutional revision. Taama, known for his frankness, declared unequivocally: “If things were done wrong, it’s my fault and I take full responsibility for it.”

National attention focused on the night of Monday, March 25, 2024, when Togolese MPs surprised the public by approving the constitutional revision, contrary to general expectations. Prior to this reversal, Taama had publicly announced that his party would vote against the bill. “By unanimous decision of the members present, it was decided that the party’s MPs will not vote in favor of the new constitution proposed by a group of MPs in the national assembly,” he stated on his Facebook page the day before the vote.

However, on the day of the vote, no NET MP opposed the constitutional revision, prompting questions and widespread criticism. This unanimous decision was even more surprising as several other opposition parties had MPs in the National Assembly.

Following these events, Taama posted a message on his Facebook page, causing even more confusion.

As the debate on the constitutional revision continues to rage, Gerry Taama and his party’s turnaround raise questions about political consistency and representation of Togolese voters.

We are in the fifth Republic, with a parliamentary system.

The National Assembly voted with 89 votes in favor, one against, and one abstention, for the proposal of constitutional revision. Therefore, we are transitioning to a fifth Republic with a parliamentary system.

The vote was by secret ballot and everyone voted according to their conscience. We must therefore accept that 89 MPs are in favor of this new constitution and now it becomes ours collectively.

I would have liked to present a different result, but those who know me know that I am not one to dwell on my fate. What happened happened. We must now organize to go to the voters and convince them to give the NET MPs the necessary votes to have an impact in the next National Assembly. We have shown great qualities over the past 5 years.

If things were done wrong, it’s my fault and I fully assume responsibility for it.

We are in the fifth Republic.
