After just a few months of hiatus, former Minister of Territorial Administration, Payadowa Boukpessi, is making a return to the Togolese political scene. According to well-informed sources, President Faure Gnassingbé designated Boukpessi as a member of the Constitutional Court on Thursday, March 21, 2024.
This nomination follows the departure of Mipamb Nam-Tougli, who was promoted to Minister of Justice and Legislation in January, replacing Kokouvi Pius Agbetomey.
With this new appointment, the Constitutional Court now has a total of six members, pending the election by the National Assembly of the successor to the late Aboudou Assouma. When the Senate becomes operational, it will also participate in the election of its two representatives within the Court.
The Constitutional Court plays a crucial role as the guardian of the country’s Constitution, especially in the electoral process, by reviewing candidate files and publishing the list of candidates at least 25 days before the election. It is responsible for judging the regularity and legality of elections and ruling on electoral disputes.
