The president of the National Alliance for Change (ANC), Jean-Pierre Fabre, strongly reacted to the unexpected postponement of the electoral calendar by the government, less than 24 hours before the start of the election campaign for the legislative and regional elections.
Fabre did not hesitate to qualify this decision as a blatant provocation by the current government. “They believe they can provoke all the time,” he declared, expressing his exasperation at what he perceives as a dangerous game by the government.
The postponement of these elections, which had already been postponed previously, has sparked outrage from Fabre, who is calling for a “complete withdrawal” of the constitutional text, arguing that the murky circumstances of its adoption cannot be tolerated. For him, the government has crossed the line by violating the country’s laws and constitution.
Highlighting the current illegitimacy of the National Assembly, whose mandate expired in late December 2023, Fabre criticized the role of this institution in the electoral process. He believes that the National Assembly should instead open an inclusive national debate, rather than acting unilaterally.
So far, no new date has been announced for the holding of legislative and regional elections, plunging the country into increasing political uncertainty. In this context of mistrust and tension, the Togolese population is waiting for clarifications and concrete actions from the authorities.
