The new dates for legislative and regional elections have been known since April 9, 2024. These elections are scheduled for April 29. As for the election campaign, it starts on April 13. This is the day when the opposition’s planned demonstrations are expected to end.

For the Dynamic for the Majority of the People, the regime wants to impose a choice on the Togolese.

COMMUNIQUE FROM THE DMP

Let us turn the upcoming legislative and regional elections into a referendum!

The DMP learns from the media this Tuesday, April 9, 2024, that following a cabinet meeting, a decree signed by the Head of State sets the date for legislative and regional elections on Monday, April 29, 2024, and the electoral campaign opens on April 13.

Faced with the backlash against the Head of State’s cavalier decision to suspend the electoral process, the RPT/UNIR regime, also struggling in its campaign for the 5th Republic, has once again taken a step back by hastily rescheduling the elections, on the same day when two list leaders, on behalf of the DMP candidates, filed a petition with the constitutional court against the decision to postpone the elections, in violation of the constitution and electoral code.

However, the DMP observes that by setting the start of the election campaign on April 13, 2024, the regime wants to impose a choice on the Togolese people, namely: to demonstrate following the invitation of opposition political parties and civil society against the constitutional coup, or to enter the electoral campaign in accordance with the decree convening the electorate.

The DMP urges the Togolese people, civil society, and the opposition, standing firm, to continue to block the ongoing constitutional coup by sidestepping this diabolical choice.

To maintain pressure on this regime, the DMP will discuss with other opposition parties and civil society associations the modalities of a major national march in all prefectures of the country on April 13, 2024, with the sole slogan: “Don’t touch my constitution!”. These demonstrations, marking the beginning of the campaign, will explain that sanctioning UNIR and its partners in the National Assembly is to reject the constitutional coup. Not sanctioning them is to approve this coup.

Togolese people, let us turn the upcoming legislative and regional elections into a referendum, like on April 27, 1958. The DMP warns: beware of the regime if it tries again to manipulate future elections. It will trigger the electoral revolution of a Togolese people humiliated, fed up, and tired, but who are determined to uphold their dignity and sovereignty.
