At the opening leg of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold in Astana, Kazakhstan, Tobi Amusan, a 26-year-old track and field athlete, broke Glory Alozie’s best time of 7.82, setting the new African indoor record.
Amusan, who already holds the world record for the 100m hurdles at 12.12, demonstrated her potential by finishing her semifinal heat in 7.91 seconds.
She then improved on this time in the final, finishing in 7.77 seconds and winning the event ahead of Nia Ali and Sarah Lavin. This time places her second on the world top list for the season, just behind Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas.
This accomplishment has moved Amusan up to number 20 on the world all-time list and has seen her break all three African records previously held by Alozie.
She first surpassed Alozie’s African Games record by running 12.68 to win in 2019, breaking the previous record of 12.74 set in 1999. Amusan then broke Alozie’s 12.44 African record by running 12.42 seconds to win her first Diamond League title.
In addition to the African indoor record, Amusan also holds the Nigeria, Nigerian Championships, African, African Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and world records in sprint hurdling.
This impressive performance at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold solidifies Amusan’s status as an elite track and field athlete, as she continues to add to her rich collection of records and accomplishments.
