President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Sports Development Minister, Senator John Owan-Enoh have expressed their pride and admiration for the Super Eagles for their impressive second-place finish at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which concluded on Sunday. Despite a 2-1 loss to the host nation, Ivory Coast, in the final, Nigeria’s leadership and sports officials are commending the team for their resilience, talent, and dedication.

Nigeria’s journey to the AFCON final began with a strong start, as captain William Troost-Ekong scored a goal to put the Super Eagles ahead 1-0 in the 38th minute with a powerful header from a corner kick. Despite the Ivory Coast dominating possession in the first half, they managed to equalize in the 62nd minute through Franck Kessie, before ultimately clinching the victory with a second goal from Sebastian Haller in the 81st minute.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised the Super Eagles for their tenacious performance and hard work throughout the tournament. He commended the team, coach, crew, and management for their sacrifices and continuously improving performance. Tinubu urged Nigerians to find unity and inspiration in the team’s display of resilience, determination, and sporting excellence, encouraging young Nigerian footballers to continue pursuing their dreams.

Similarly, Sports Minister Owan-Enoh expressed his gratitude to the Super Eagles for their admirable performance in the tournament, acknowledging their commitment to representing Nigeria with pride and passion. He congratulated the team on their second-place finish and extended special recognition to William Troost-Ekong, who was named the player of the tournament for AFCON 2023.

Despite falling short in the final, both President Tinubu and Minister Owan-Enoh emphasized the significance of the Super Eagles’ achievement and the positive impact it has had on the nation. They encouraged the team to continue striving for excellence and assured them of the nation’s ongoing support and admiration.

The praise and admiration from Nigeria’s leadership and sports officials reflect the widespread respect and appreciation for the Super Eagles’ dedication, talent, and resilience on the AFCON stage.
