The annual Tribal Chic fashion show that took place at Tribe Hotel was a night filled with flair, flamboyance, and fashion lovers from all over. The theme of the event was African Royalty, and guests arrived dressed to impress in tailor-made Ankara and Kitenge garments, with some even showcasing traditional attire with a modern twist. A total of 14 designers had the opportunity to showcase their work on the runway in the hotel’s lobby, with brands such as Afrowema, Aulgah Nato, 1407 Style, Studio Namnyak, Bana the Brand, Safarrah, and Nashipai displaying the versatility of African culture through their fashion designs.

The event took place on February 3 and featured more than just the usual bright and colorful African prints that attendees were accustomed to seeing. This year, there was a focus on showcasing designs that would be inspirational for fans of African wear. Here are some of the emerging trends from the Tribal Chic 2024 fashion show.

Feather Collars: Charity Kiarie, designer of Kiarie Afrika, shared her story of hope and determination, which led to the creation of her famous feathered collection. Her colored feather collars and earrings were paired with designs from Bana the Brand. The feathers come in a variety of vibrant colors and are attached to either brass or beadwork, bringing a unique and eye-catching element to each piece.

Hide Coats: Cindy Kwak of Nashipai Leather presented the idea of upscaling animal hide skin with cow hair still attached. The result was a daring and regal look that caught the attention of attendees. The designer’s ability to transform traditional materials into high-end fashion pieces challenged the conventional notions of African fashion and added a distinctive element to the runway.

Comfortable Fashion: Many designers showcased stunning yet comfortable pieces that are practical for everyday wear. Brands such as Safarrah, Afrowema, and Studio Namnyak demonstrated how fashion can be both stylish and comfortable, incorporating versatile designs that can be worn casually while maintaining a sophisticated appeal.

Inclusivity: Designers at the show were mindful of various body shapes and sizes, offering inclusive designs for curvaceous women. Examples included plus-size collections from Aert Fashion, Aulgah Nato, and Ilhan Dahir. These designers showcased wrap dresses that were flattering and stylish, expressing a positive message around body diversity in the fashion industry.

Less African Print Patterns: The show challenged the traditional use of Ankara and Kitenge fabric, with designers opting for a different approach by incorporating neutral and earthy colors, artistic patterns, and bright, bold colors. This shift demonstrated the flexibility and modernity of African fashion, showcasing a diversity of styles beyond traditional prints.

The Tribal Chic fashion show also featured a Nigerian designer, Ugochukwu Onukwobiri of 1407 Style, as well as seven others selected for the Creative DNA program, courtesy of the British Council. This initiative aims to help designers discover alternative and innovative approaches within the global fashion system. The 14 designers, including Okana, Itikadi, Reina Gowns, Wakianda, Aert Fashion, Ankole Luxury, and Kiarie Afrika, utilized what they learned through the fashion accelerator program at Tribal Chic, marking the show’s 13th successful event.

Overall, the Tribal Chic 2024 fashion show was a celebration of African culture, creativity, and innovation, highlighting the beauty of African fashion and its ability to evolve with contemporary style. The event brought together talented designers and fashion enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for African artistry on the runway.
