The steering committee of the Regional Stabilization Facility for the Lake Chad Basin, Chad Window, is holding an evaluation meeting on March 4 at a hotel in N’Djamena.
The Chad National Window project is the Chadian component of the Regional Stability Facility for Lake Chad, which covers Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad. These countries bordering Lake Chad are facing a multifaceted crisis exacerbated by attacks from the Boko Haram sect. It is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 2020.
According to Kamil Kamaludeen, the Resident Representative of the UNDP and Co-Chair of the steering committee, the project interventions have enabled the achievement of stabilization objectives in 4 localities by 2023 and the launch of activities in 3 others in the provinces of Lac and Hadjer Lamis. He adds that more than half a million people, of which over 50% are women, have directly or indirectly benefited from the support provided through the 4 components of the project: restoring the authority and legitimacy of the state; establishing and operational security and justice systems; constructing or rehabilitating essential social services and infrastructure, making them functional and accessible; and increasing livelihood opportunities.
For the Secretary of State for Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation, and also the chair of the steering committee, Saïnta Ndem Ngoïdi, this project has seen a return and strengthening of state services in the intervention areas, the development of trust between communities and between them and authorities through improved security of persons and property.
The objective of this meeting, according to the chair, is to examine in detail the results documented by the UNDP in order to formulate guidelines and make decisions based on recommendations made by the technical committee.
She also expressed her gratitude to donors, especially Germany, the Great Britain, the Netherlands, the European Union, Sweden, Japan, and the African Development Bank for their commitments to this cause.
