According to an internal document accessed by the Spanish media El Independiente, the department led by Fernando Grande-Marlaska wishes to send a new advisor to Rabat, as well as two chief inspectors, one to the capital of the Kingdom and the other to Tangier.
These positions in Morocco are of extreme importance for Spain and for the security officials of this Iberian country, given the historical relationship between the two countries. Being assigned to Morocco is a reward for agents that also reflects their ability to carry out their duties.
These are highly sought-after positions, the media indicates, particularly because of the salary supplement that comes with them. Advisors receive an additional 27,131.86 euros to their annual salary, while chief inspectors receive 10,700.64 euros.
Unions often criticize appointments to these positions as they see them as political decisions and “cronyism.”
Among the proposed embassies, the one in Morocco is the most significant, as it involves a complete change in all internal positions. The Kingdom of Morocco is essential in the fight against terrorism and immigration.
The recent demonstrations by Spanish farmers were directed, among other things, against the entry of products from Morocco into the European Union, as they claim that they do not undergo the same quality controls.
The current representative of the Ministry of the Interior in Rabat is Senior Commissioner Juan Enrique Taborda, who, according to police sources, is expected to retire this summer, hence the replacement of the entire embassy.
It is worth noting that the Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, praised, during his last visit to Rabat, the quality of cooperation between Morocco and Spain in migration, calling it “exemplary.” “Cooperation between Morocco and Spain is exemplary. We are long-standing, close, reliable, and loyal partners,” the Spanish minister stated in a statement to the public television channel TVE.
During an exclusive interview with the MAP news agency, the minister highlighted that “the foundations of cooperation between Morocco and Spain have been built over the years on shared objectives and principles, within the framework of mutual trust and absolute loyalty, allowing both parties to develop means of interaction in a spirit of efficiency and effectiveness.”
