The joint Parliament has overwhelmingly approved the four amendments to the interim Constitution of Somalia.

Each of the four amendments was approved separately, and then the two houses of Parliament approved them together.

212 members of the House of the People and 42 Upper House members voted to amend the Constitution, with no one rejecting or objecting to the decision as declared by the Parliament Speaker.

Among the constitutional amendments approved by both houses of Parliament today is that the upcoming President will be elected by the Somali people, and the Prime Minister will appoint the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Additionally, the members of the Federal Electoral Implementation and Oversight Commission were increased to 18 members.

On the other hand, opposition politicians who previously criticized the process of amending the constitution are expected to respond to the Parliament’s decision, pledging to communicate through the media and oppose the decision.

Opposition politicians had previously accused President Hassan Sheikh of pursuing a personal agenda in amending the constitution, seeking to extend his term in office.

The Puntland regional government has also strongly opposed the decisions made by the two houses regarding the amendments to the Constitution.
