This Tuesday, March 5, 2024, marks a historic turning point for the Democratic Republic of Congo with the official launch of its first professional mixed martial arts (MMA) league. The announcement was made at a press conference by the league president, Cedrick, in the presence of prominent athletes, influential personalities, and the president of the MMA Federation in the DRC.
The League aims to become the best on an international scale and aims to attract high-level athletes. President Cedrick has called on Congolese athletes playing abroad to comply by obtaining a license from the national federation in order to participate in fights.
The first professional fights are scheduled for June 30 of this year. As part of its strategy, the League plans to organize fights every Saturday to raise the level of competition. Major events are also planned, with the participation of international athletes.
After the conference, the president of the Professional MMA League in the DRC said: “This is the first time we have a professional MMA League. If you truly want to evolve in MMA, please contact our federation or visit our website. You can also write to us… We can also guide you on how to become a professional athlete.”
He added: “Our overall goal is to promote sports and athletes. When we talk about professionalism, we see an opportunity to fight against negative values. We invite practitioners to come and express themselves in the arena and aim to give their lives a different meaning through sports.”
In conclusion, he encouraged young people to invest in sports. “If you look closely, sports are the second wealth of our country. MMA combines several sports disciplines… Here, we prioritize professionalism and business. If athletes work hard and aspire to the title of champion, they can also earn money,” he emphasized.
This initiative marks a significant advancement in the Congolese sports landscape and opens up new prospects for MMA athletes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The professional mixed martial arts league promises to raise the level of competition and put Congo on the international map of combat sports.
