Speaking at the opening of a study day organized at the House of Representatives as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day under the theme “Family Code and Approaches to Achieving Equality”, Mr. Talbi El Alami highlighted the importance of the reform process initiated by the Kingdom through consistent measures in the areas of gender equality, both in terms of legislation and in national projects implemented under the leadership of His Majesty the King.
In this sense, he emphasized that the Sovereign attaches particular importance to the Family Code, as since His accession to the Throne of His Glorious Ancestors, His Majesty the King has continuously reaffirmed the importance of the family as the basic unit of society, while emphasizing on several occasions the fundamental values that must be adopted in the context of family relationships, foremost among them the dignity of women.
This Royal High Solicitude was behind the adoption of a modern Family Code in 2004, which has demonstrated its progress and uniqueness, whether in terms of formulation methodology or content, Mr. Talbi El Alami pointed out, noting that this same Royal Solicitude is also evident in the Royal Speech addressed to the Nation on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the Throne’s festivities, in which the Sovereign noted that the experience of implementing the Family Code was marked by “dysfunctions”.
He thus informed that the High Instructions of His Majesty the King for the revision of this Code constitutes a reference roadmap aimed at guaranteeing the rights of all, men and women, and gender equality within the family framework. To this end, he called for addressing a number of challenges, including those related to the interpretation and application of legal texts, emphasizing the importance of supporting the reform of the Family Code.
Furthermore, Mr. Talbi El Alami highlighted the importance of the social protection project that will respond to the various needs of women and combat the discrimination and exclusion they face in the fields of work or health. It will also offer them the opportunity to benefit from health services and enjoy their reproductive rights, in order to gradually achieve their empowerment and economic independence, as well as to combat violence against them and promote their participation in public life.
At the legislative level, Mr. Talbi El Alami stated that the House of Representatives addresses the issue of women’s rights not only on International Women’s Day, but throughout the year, in a practical and continuous manner, through a strategic approach aimed at institutionalizing issues of equality and parity, including dedicating an entire section to equality and fairness in the House’s internal regulations, in addition to creating a thematic group on equality and parity.
According to him, the formation of the Group aims above all to contribute to national efforts to promote gender equality, by proposing, supporting, and strengthening women’s achievements in all areas, including access to decision-making spheres, and by strengthening common action links with other civil society organizations and legal and political actors to promote the status of women.
