In an era where cybercrime is constantly evolving, recent discoveries by Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence team reveal an increasingly threatening digital landscape.
Experts have highlighted a concerning trend: nearly 10 million devices were targeted by data stealing malware in the year 2023. These findings, drawn from careful analysis of infostealers logs circulating on the Dark Web, underscore the growing sophistication of tactics employed by cybercriminals. Even more alarming, each infected device has an average of 50.9 login credentials stolen, exposing users’ sensitive data to considerable risks.
This worrying reality poses a growing threat to both individuals and businesses, who are increasingly vulnerable to malicious attacks. Among the most striking findings, it is noted that the “.com” domain remains the most targeted, followed closely by domains associated with Brazil (.br), India (.in), Colombia (.co), and Vietnam (.vn).
Particularly concerning, the “.ma” domain, linked to Morocco, recorded an alarming number of 1.1 million compromised accounts in the year 2023 alone.
These revelations highlight the urgent need for digital actors to strengthen their security measures to counteract this persistent and evolving threat. Faced with the alarming escalation of data stealing malware attacks, Kaspersky has taken the initiative to launch a dedicated page aimed at raising awareness and effectively preventing these growing threats.
Aware of the magnitude of the danger, Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence team has identified that around 10 million personal and professional devices were compromised by such malware in 2023. This represents a staggering increase of 643% over a three-year period.
The data used for this analysis comes from malicious log files actively exchanged on the Dark Web, constantly monitored by Kaspersky to help businesses ensure the security of their customers and employees.
By launching this dedicated page, Kaspersky offers users and organizations concrete strategies to minimize the risks associated with these attacks, thereby strengthening the fight against cybercrime and promoting a more secure everyday use of technology.
Despite a slight 9% decrease in the number of malicious log files and infiltrations recorded in 2023 compared to the previous year, it is crucial not to underestimate the growing threat posed by cybercrime. This decrease does not indicate a weakening in cybercriminals’ demand for credentials and passwords.
In reality, it is highly likely that some compromised information in 2023 may have been randomly disclosed on the Dark Web throughout the year. Consequently, the actual number of attacks and breaches is likely much higher than the initially identified 10 million.
According to in-depth analyses conducted by Kaspersky researchers on malicious log files activity, it is estimated that the number of infections in 2023 could amount to approximately 16 million.
This highlights the persistence and ever-growing magnitude of this virtual threat. These findings underscore the urgent need to strengthen security and awareness measures to effectively combat cybercrime and protect users’ and businesses’ sensitive data. In terms of compromised accounts, the .com domain is at the top.
In the case of the “.ma” domain, for Morocco, 1.1 million accounts were compromised in 2023. Among the stolen information are login credentials for accessing social media accounts, online banking services, cryptocurrency wallets, and various corporate services such as emails or internal systems.
