After five years of thrilling anticipation, the long-awaited conclusion of the trilogy is finally about to see the light of day. Beginning with “La guerre, la guerre, la guerre” in 2020, and continued with “Regardez-nous danser” in 2022, “J’emporterai le feu” masterfully concludes this historical saga, weaving a fascinating narrative through the twists and turns of Leïla Slimani’s family history.

Directly inspired by the poignant story of her grandparents, whom the author has always considered as iconic figures, this saga unfolds starting in 1944, at the moment of the encounter between Mathilde, a young Alsatian woman, and Amine Belhaj, a soldier in the French army. Their journey will lead them to Meknes, a Moroccan city of garrisons and settlers, where they will establish their home.

Cited by Livres Hebdo, Leïla Slimani expresses her ambition to tell the recent history of her country through this trilogy, but not from a single standpoint. On the contrary, she explores a multitude of individual destinies, thus offering a rich and nuanced perspective. She emphasizes that each era can be told in different ways, depending on the social position, gender, and cultural identity of those who live it.
