The military agreement between Somalia and the United Arab Emirates that was signed in February last year 2023 has revealed important information related to the provisions of the agreement.

According to Middle East Eye, the agreement allows the UAE to use Somalia’s land, sea ports, and airports, as well as grants the right to establish military bases and training camps to carry out its operations.

The agreement also stipulates that Somalis were not informed about the details, and specifically mentions that Emirati troops stationed in Somalia received lucrative benefits.

“All those involved in the agreement must provide legal and international accountability, whether under Somali law or international responsibility,” the agreement clearly states.

It also suggests that Emirati officials cannot be prosecuted at a national or international level, even in the case of a dispute or a request for extradition.

The most disturbing and dangerous provision is the one that allows the UAE government to intervene in Somalia’s internal affairs since the agreement was approved, as the UAE has started building new bases in Somalia, which exacerbates the tension and security threats posed by the agreement.

The Somali federal government previously annulled another type of agreement with the UAE, signed during Farmaajo’s presidency, but now the Hassan Sheikh government has resumed it.
