Alpha Amadu Jalloh (The Fox): Sierra Leone Telegraph: 19 March 2024:

In a democratic society, values such as fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity are fundamental. However, recent developments in Sierra Leone have cast doubt on the state of democracy in the country.

The significant influence of the Bio family in various sectors of governance has raised concerns about nepotism and the weakening of democratic principles.

President Julius Maada Bio, the patriarch of the Bio family and a symbol of honour in Sierra Leone, holds considerable power and influence. What is even more concerning is the widespread presence of his family members in key government institutions.

From telecommunications to transportation, education to energy, it appears that the Bio family has a hand in almost every sector of governance.

For example, James Bio’s leadership of Sierratel, a once vital telecommunications provider now struggling under his management, has led to questions about his capabilities and intentions.

Likewise, family members like Tennyson Bio, Yankuba Askia Bio, and Junior Bio hold significant positions in institutions such as the National Revenue Authority, Water Quay, and the National Sports Authority, respectively.

Moreover, the Bio family’s influence extends beyond national boundaries, with members like Francess Bio serving as the High Commissioner to Ghana. This pattern of family dominance in key diplomatic roles raises doubts about the fairness and effectiveness of Sierra Leone’s foreign policy.

The issue of nepotism becomes more evident when examining the qualifications and performance of these family members. Many have been criticized for their lack of competence and contribution, with some suggesting that their presence in these institutions is more of a burden than a benefit.

The lack of transparency in their appointments only adds to the perception of favoritism and cronyism at the highest levels of government.

President Julius Maada Bio, who should uphold democratic values, appears to be part of this trend. By allowing his family members to occupy key positions of power, he not only undermines the principles of meritocracy but also creates a breeding ground for corruption and conflicts of interest.

This concentration of power within the Bio family not only suppresses dissent but also perpetuates a culture of entitlement and impunity.

It is crucial for President Bio to take immediate action to address these concerns. By removing his family members from their current roles and appointing individuals based on merit and qualifications, he can demonstrate his commitment to upholding democratic values and rebuilding trust in Sierra Leone’s institutions.

Additionally, measures must be implemented to prevent such abuses of power in the future, including stronger oversight and accountability mechanisms.

Sierra Leone deserves better than being under the control of a single family’s ambitions. It is time for President Bio to prioritize the interests of the country over those of his family and restore faith in the democratic process. Only then can Sierra Leone reach its true potential as a flourishing and inclusive democracy.
