The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas made history by formalizing its position as the first Caribbean nation to host the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). The official host partnership agreement was signed last week, setting the stage for the upcoming event, AMM2024, which will take place in Nassau on June 12-13. This event will bring together a diverse group of attendees, including African/Caribbean leaders, government officials, policymakers, corporate leaders, bankers, academics, and other thought leaders.
The highlight of the event will be the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum (ACTIF) on June 14. This forum will feature colorful events celebrating the shared culture of African and Caribbean nations and highlighting their common socio-economic aspirations. The aim is to foster greater trade, investment, and direct transport linkages between the two regions, stimulating economic growth and development with beneficial societal impacts.
During the signing ceremony, the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, The Honourable Philip Davis, emphasized the importance of hosting both the AAM and ACTIF events. He spoke about leveraging the shared history, identities, and cultures of AfriCaribbean nations to forge stronger ties that will benefit both regions economically. He also stressed the need for unified global action on issues like climate change to enhance the global influence of African and Caribbean nations.
Professor Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, highlighted the significance of holding the Afreximbank Annual Meetings in The Bahamas for the first time. He pointed to the positive outlook for many African and CARICOM countries, citing IMF forecasts that seven African countries and one CARICOM country are expected to be among the top 10 fastest-growing economies globally. He emphasized the mutual benefit of closer links between the two regions to accelerate growth and prosperity.
The theme for the upcoming events, ‘Owning Our Destiny: Economic Prosperity on the Platform of Global Africa’, reflects the focus on finding solutions to the challenges facing African Caribbean economies. This includes promoting growth, development, and prosperity across Africa and the Caribbean, as well as accelerating intra-African trade and investment flows, including with the diaspora.
