At just 25 years old, Ldyia Nabawesa stands out as a unique figure in the world of taxi driving. A mother who also breastfeeds her child, she navigates the Namirembe–Namugoona route in Kampala with skill and determination, defying the expectations of both passengers and fellow drivers.
Unlike many women who choose careers in more traditional fields like running restaurants or salons, Ms. Nabawesa has carved out her own space in the male-dominated world of taxi driving. She can be easily spotted on her daily shifts through Namirembe, Nakulabye, Kasubi, and Namungoona, showcasing her resilience and passion for the job.
Her journey into the taxi business was not an easy one. After completing Senior Four, she resisted pressure to pursue other career paths and instead found her calling in driving taxis. Starting out as a tout and conductor, she faced challenges such as unwanted advances from male drivers. However, she never compromised her principles and stood her ground, refusing to succumb to their demands.
Despite the obstacles she faced, Ms. Nabawesa persisted and eventually found a mentor who taught her how to drive. With determination and perseverance, she overcame the skepticism and discrimination she encountered at the Nansana taxi stage and established herself as a respected driver in the community.
The taxi industry in Uganda, like many other countries, is primarily dominated by men. However, the landscape is gradually changing, with more women like Ms. Nabawesa and her counterparts entering the field as drivers, conductors, and guides. Although they still encounter challenges such as harassment and discrimination, these women are determined to prove themselves and pursue their passion for driving.
Ms. Nabawesa’s story is just one example of the resilience and determination displayed by women in the male-dominated taxi industry. Through her courage and perseverance, she has not only carved out her own space in a challenging environment but has also inspired other women to join her in breaking stereotypes and pursuing their dreams. As she continues to navigate the streets of Kampala, she serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of women in the face of adversity.
