Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and Digital Communication, Eliud Owalo, recently spoke at Kenyatta University and encouraged university students to take sports seriously as a profession. According to Owalo, the days are gone when talent in sports could just waste away due to a heavy focus on classwork. He believes that universities should put in a lot of effort to harness and grow talents as part of helping students secure their futures.
In his address, Owalo emphasized the importance of taking sports seriously, highlighting that it can be a means of livelihood and can even pave the way for entrepreneurship. He encouraged students to consider sports as a viable alternative to formal employment, emphasizing the financial prospects that come with excelling in sports.
Owalo’s message to the students was complemented by his donation of a set of playing kits to Kenyatta University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams – Pirates and Oryx. As an alumnus of the university and a former member of the basketball team in 1994, Owalo’s gesture aimed to demonstrate his continued support for the institution and its athletic programs.
During his speech, Owalo pointed out the significant influence that sports can have on an individual’s life, referencing the many former players who have excelled in various societal roles. He encouraged the students not to believe the misconception that being too involved in sports could hinder their potential for success in other areas of life.
Additionally, Owalo challenged the basketball teams at Kenyatta University to renew their rivalry with the University of Nairobi Terrorists and pledged to offer his support to the teams as they prepare for the All African University Games scheduled for September in Lagos, Nigeria. His commitment to supporting the teams was met with applause and appreciation from the university’s basketball teams and the Kenya Basketball Federation. Paul Otula, the chairman of the Kenya Basketball Federation, expressed his gratitude for the CS’s support, highlighting the potential for the growth of basketball with backing from corporate entities.
In conclusion, Owalo’s message at Kenyatta University served as an encouragement for students to pursue their sporting talents with dedication and commitment. His donation of playing kits and promise to support the basketball teams demonstrated his belief in the positive impact of sports on the lives of young individuals and his commitment to fostering athletic talent among university students. With a supportive environment and guidance from leaders like Owalo, students can pursue their athletic passions and realize the potential for a successful career in sports.
