Kenyan police have announced the arrest of Kevin Kangethe, who was wanted for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu. The 40-year-old suspect was apprehended at a nightclub in Kenya following a tipoff and will be extradited. Mbitu’s body was found in a car at a parking garage at Boston Logan International Airport, two days after she was reported missing by her family.
Authorities have not confirmed whether Kangethe has legal representation at this time. Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden expressed gratitude to the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, the FBI, Kenyan law enforcement agencies, the Kenyan government, and the Massachusetts State Police for their efforts in tracking down the suspect.
David Procopio, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Police, highlighted the joint effort involved in Kangethe’s arrest, describing it as an international coordination that reached across oceans and continents. The next step in the process is the extradition of Kangethe, with no set timetable as of yet. The U.S. Embassy also commended the efforts of Kenyan law enforcement in making the arrest.
The details of the arrest and the subsequent extradition process emphasize the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies across borders. This case highlights the importance of international cooperation in bringing fugitives to justice and ensuring that they face the consequences of their actions.
The successful apprehension of Kangethe is a testament to the dedication and coordination of multiple law enforcement agencies, both within the United States and internationally. The extradition process will be the next phase in bringing closure to the case of Margaret Mbitu’s tragic death.
