Last year, the students of Parental Care Primary School in Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality brought pride to their school when they emerged as winners of the African Debate competitions. Competing against 22 other schools at Our Lady of Fatima Kasarani in Nairobi, Kenya, they clinched the top spot. This victory meant that they would be representing the African continent at the world debate championships in the Czech Republic in June 2024, where they would face off against students from Australia, Asia, and Europe.

However, there was a shadow of uncertainty looming over their participation in the global championships as they struggled to raise the required budget of Shs80 million. Team Leader Trevor Yebaza mentioned that despite their efforts, they had not been able to secure the necessary funds. They reached out to leaders and various partners in hopes of receiving financial support, as highlighted in a report in the Sunday Monitor dated March 17 titled “Hopes fade as Ugandan school struggles to raise money for global debating contest.”

In a landscape dominated by negative news about the deteriorating state of the education system, the success story of these students stood out as a beacon of hope. Amidst the bleak narrative surrounding our educational institutions, the achievement of our students in a continental competition served as a refreshing reminder of the potential and talent present within our schools.

It is imperative to acknowledge and reward such efforts as a means of inspiring others to pursue excellence. The students of Parental Care Primary School should not have to resort to pleading for support from individual letters or leaders. While there are numerous worthy causes that require funding, their endeavor should not be overlooked. By rallying behind them, we can instill confidence and ambition in the hearts of aspiring students from lesser-known schools across the country.

In a society plagued by widespread corruption, misconduct by public officials, and societal challenges, the success of these students serves as a beacon of hope. Their journey to the Czech Republic for the global debate championships symbolizes resilience and determination in the face of adversity. As we await their performance in June, let us celebrate their achievements and anticipate a positive outcome that will resonate with all those striving for success in the field of education.
