Sudan’s Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces, also known as “Tagadum,” released a statement on March 30, 2024, condemning the recent violence perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Al-Jazirah State. The coalition strongly opposed the attacks on civilians and the forced displacement of individuals, categorizing these actions as a direct violation of the joint Addis Ababa Declaration.

The Addis Ababa Declaration, signed on January 3 by RSF commander Hemedti and Tagadum leader Abdallah Hamdok, was intended to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. In a joint effort to promote peace, the declaration included provisions requiring the RSF to ensure aid access in controlled areas and to create conditions that would allow displaced civilians to safely return to their homes. However, the recent events in Al-Jazirah State have proven to be in stark contrast to these commitments.

Critics have previously accused Tagadum of failing to explicitly condemn the actions of the RSF, instead referring to them as “the warring party.” In response, Tagadum reiterated its dedication to the safety of civilians, emphasizing the need for an end to the conflict, the establishment of lasting peace, and a transition to democracy. The coalition also called for thorough investigations into the crimes committed in Al-Jazirah and demanded that those responsible be held accountable for their actions.

The situation in Al-Jazirah State is described as unique, as the RSF took control of the region following the withdrawal of the army. Civilians in the area have reportedly been subjected to targeted attacks aimed at looting their property, further exacerbating their already precarious circumstances.

In solidarity with Tagadum, two other Sudanese political groups, the Sudanese Congress Party and the Sudanese Professionals Association, issued separate statements condemning the actions of the RSF in Al-Jazirah. These statements serve to underscore the unified stance against the violence and injustice perpetrated in the region.

Overall, Tagadum’s condemnation of the recent violence in Al-Jazirah State highlights the ongoing challenges faced by civilians in conflict-affected regions of Sudan. As efforts for peace and stability continue, it is imperative that all parties involved uphold their commitments to protect civilians, ensure access to aid, and work towards a peaceful and democratic future for the Sudanese people.
