On March 23, 2024, United Nations experts in Geneva raised serious concerns about the escalating issue of trafficking in persons, particularly women and girls, in war-torn Sudan. The experts highlighted the alarming reports of trafficking for purposes such as sexual exploitation and slavery, forced marriage, and the recruitment of boys for participation in armed conflict.

The backdrop for these disturbing findings is the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, a country plagued by conflict since mid-April 2023. This prolonged conflict has led to the mass displacement of over 9 million people, exacerbating the vulnerability of women, girls, and children to trafficking and exploitation.

Despite efforts to provide support to victims and survivors, the experts noted a significant decline in access to assistance since December 2023, following intensified conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army (SAF). This diminished access has left young women and girls, particularly those who are internally displaced, at greater risk of being trafficked for sexual purposes.

Reports of women and girls being sold at slave markets under the control of armed groups, including the RSF in North Darfur, are particularly disturbing. The experts condemned these practices as blatant violations of human rights and called for urgent action to address the situation.

Additionally, the experts expressed grave concerns about the surge in child, early, and forced marriage, which often stems from family separation and gender-based violence. Recruitment of children into armed groups for combat roles was also highlighted as a severe violation of international humanitarian law and a crime that demanded accountability.

The ongoing looting and attacks against key UN agencies have further impeded humanitarian efforts in Sudan, depriving vulnerable populations of crucial support. Humanitarian organizations have been forced to shutter programs due to the destruction of facilities, including spaces dedicated to protecting women and girls from exploitation.

The experts noted that armed groups’ control over movement and access to conflict-affected areas has hindered the delivery of aid and services. This interference not only exacerbates the suffering of at-risk populations but also heightens the risks of trafficking and exploitation.

In light of these troubling developments, the experts stressed the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and conducting thorough investigations into human rights violations. They called for a robust response to address the challenges posed by ongoing hostilities and ensure the protection of vulnerable populations.

Lastly, the closure of the UN Mission in Sudan amid persisting violence and insecurity was highlighted as a critical issue that could further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. The experts emphasized the need for continued international support and coordinated efforts to address the multifaceted challenges facing Sudan.
