Port Sudan, March 2, 2024 – Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Ali Al-Sadiq, recently made a decision to reject a request from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to bring humanitarian aid across the border with Chad. This refusal came after a meeting between the Minister and Karl Schaw, the Deputy Executive Director of WFP, during the Antalya Diplomatic Forum in Turkey.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was mentioned that Karl Schaw had expressed the WFP’s interest in utilizing the Chadian border to deliver aid. However, Minister Ali Al-Sadiq pointed out that compromising the security and stability of the country was not an option. This was due to evidence suggesting that the Chadian border had been used for arms transfers to the rebel Rapid Support Forces, a militia that is currently in conflict with the Sudanese government.

Sudan has accused Chad, along with other countries, of being involved in supplying weapons to the Rapid Support Forces through corridors facilitated by the UAE. In light of these security concerns, Ali Al-Sadiq advised the WFP to consider purchasing humanitarian aid from local markets to address the needs of Sudanese citizens. He also suggested exploring alternative methods for introducing relief into the country.

The United Nations has reported that 25 million Sudanese individuals are in need of humanitarian assistance, with nearly 18 million facing acute food insecurity. This dire situation is exacerbated by a lack of funding for UN agencies’ plans to provide aid to millions affected by the ongoing conflict in the region.

Humanitarian organizations have raised concerns about government forces impeding the delivery of aid to vulnerable populations, particularly the 6.3 million people who have been displaced from their homes in search of safety. Many of these displaced individuals are living in dire conditions, further highlighting the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

As the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the well-being of the country’s citizens and work towards finding sustainable solutions to the ongoing humanitarian challenges. By fostering cooperation and dialogue, it is possible to alleviate the suffering of those most affected by the conflict and ensure that essential aid reaches those in need.
