On March 5, 2024, (PORT SUDAN) – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) made an important announcement regarding an advancement in humanitarian access in Sudan. Clementine Nkwita Salami, the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, confirmed that after discussions with the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government has agreed to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery through three main entry points.

According to Salami, the Sudanese government has committed to allowing aid to enter from Chad through the Al-Tina border crossing into Darfur, as well as from South Sudan through Renk’s border crossing to Kosti in El Obeid, Nile State. Additionally, humanitarian flights to El Fasher, Kadugli, and El Obeid airports will also be permitted.

This announcement signifies a positive step forward, in line with the Jeddah Declaration’s plea for safe and guaranteed humanitarian corridors. Salami emphasized in a statement posted on Z, “This will greatly facilitate the efforts of the UN and its partners to reach people in dire need of life-saving assistance.”

However, Salami made it clear that the work is far from over. She stated, “We will continue advocating for expanded access to ensure all vulnerable communities receive the assistance they need.” Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Salami stressed, “There is no time to waste. We are already in contact with the authorities and relevant parties to swiftly implement predictable, accountable, and timely actions to get humanitarian convoys back on the road.”

Despite the positive developments, the Sudanese foreign ministry did not release a statement confirming the agreement. Initially, Sudan had rejected humanitarian access to the RSF-controlled areas in Darfur. Al-Tina is situated in North Darfur, under the control of the Sudanese army and armed groups who are signatories to the Juba peace agreement.

This advancement provides a crucial route for delivering essential aid to Sudanese communities grappling with significant challenges. The UN and its partners remain dedicated to working together to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

In conclusion, the agreement between the Sudanese government and humanitarian organizations marks a significant milestone in improving humanitarian access in Sudan. By opening up key entry points and permitting humanitarian flights to crucial locations, the government has demonstrated a willingness to cooperate in ensuring that aid reaches those in need. However, it is essential that efforts continue to expand access and provide assistance to all vulnerable communities. The commitment of the UN and its partners to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan remains unwavering, and it is vital that swift and effective action is taken to make a real difference in the lives of those affected.
