Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations has made a call for the condemnation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in light of their alleged support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a year-long conflict against the Sudanese army. In a formal letter to the Security Council, the representative accuses the UAE of orchestrating and backing the RSF’s attacks on the Sudanese military with assistance from Chad.

The extensive 78-page complaint, obtained by Sudan Tribune, details the UAE’s alleged role in planning and supporting the RSF’s aggressive actions against the Sudanese military. The complaint also claims that Chad played a part in aiding the UAE’s efforts by allowing the passage of military supplies and mercenaries through its territory, as well as facilitating the evacuation of wounded RSF personnel to Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

According to the Sudanese mission, the ongoing support provided by the UAE to the RSF, including the supply of weapons, equipment, and mercenaries, is in violation of the UN Charter and poses a threat to regional and international security. The attack on strategic targets in Khartoum on April 15, 2023, is described in the letter as a “coup attempt” aimed at toppling the President of the Sovereignty Council and other government officials.

The letter calls upon the UN Security Council to take immediate action and compel the UAE to cease its support for the RSF. It also asserts Sudan’s right to self-defence and mentions that international legal proceedings have been initiated against the UAE to recover losses incurred during the conflict.

Moreover, the Sudanese mission urges Chad to put an end to its role in facilitating the flow of military supplies and mercenary fighters in support of the RSF. The document reportedly includes supporting evidence in the form of reports and photographs to substantiate the claims made against the UAE and Chad.

In response to the allegations, the UAE has denied any involvement in supporting the RSF. Although diplomatic relations between Sudan and the UAE remain intact, there is speculation that such ties could be severed as mediators from the United States and Saudi Arabia work to bring the UAE into the ongoing peace talks in Jeddah.

Overall, the situation highlights the complex dynamics at play in the region and underscores the importance of international intervention to address conflicts and promote peace and stability. Only time will tell how these allegations and calls for action will influence the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
