President Kiir addressed the significant impact of the conflict in Sudan on the economy during a speech on April 3, 2024. He highlighted the challenges faced due to the war, particularly after Sudan declared force majeure, affecting production stations in areas controlled by paramilitary rapid support. This declaration led to a disruption in operations, hampering the economy’s reliance on oil revenues.

In response to these challenges, the South Sudan government announced a 400% increase in civil servants’ salaries. However, the president acknowledged that this adjustment might not be sustainable due to the economic dependence on oil. The devaluation of the South Sudan pound against foreign currencies, especially the US dollar, further worsened the economic situation, causing a shortage of goods and services.

The theme of the reconstituted transitional national legislative assembly was “Together building a better future through parliamentary consensus.” During this session, President Kiir called for democratic resolutions of conflicts and urged parties to avoid political violence. He stressed the need for urgent actions to address the economic crisis, including revenue diversification and increased local production.

To combat the challenges, Kiir announced plans to secure the supply of fuel and essential goods. He instructed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to revive agricultural schemes across the country to boost food production. South Sudan relies heavily on oil exports through Sudan for revenue, making it vulnerable to disruptions in the oil delivery process due to the conflict in Sudan.

Experts, senior government officials, and opposition leaders have warned that the ongoing war in Sudan could lead to an economic collapse, impacting law, order, and the social system in South Sudan. President Kiir emphasized the need to shift the economy’s focus from oil dependency to agricultural production as a sustainable solution.

In conclusion, President Kiir highlighted the urgent need for economic reforms and diversification to mitigate the impact of the conflict in Sudan on South Sudan’s economy. By focusing on local production and food security, the government aims to build a more resilient economy independent of oil revenues. Embracing democratic processes and avoiding violence are essential for resolving issues and rebuilding a stable and prosperous future for South Sudan.
