St Catherine wins inaugural mind games competition

St Catherine Junior School, Sonde in Mukono municipality, emerged as the winners of the first primary schools mind games and swimming competitions that they hosted. The competitions, organized by Mukono municipal council in association with Mukono Municipality Schools Sports Association (Mumussa), also saw participation from Cornerstone Junior School, Ngandu Primary School, Treasured Kids Nest School, Destiny Kindergarten, and Destiny Preparatory School, Lumuli.

The schools were initially scheduled to compete in scrabble, draft, ludo, chess, and swimming, but ultimately only participated in the latter three. St Catherine Junior School emerged victorious in ludo and swimming, while Treasured Kids Nest School claimed victory in chess. Overall, St Catherine Junior School clinched the top spot, followed by Treasured Kids Nest School and Cornerstone Junior School.

Prizes were awarded to all participants, with each of the top three schools receiving a trophy and three winners’ medals. Ivan Gilbert Ssentongo, the former vice president (technical) of the Scrabble Association of Uganda, highlighted that St Catherine Junior School had dedicated significant time to practicing scrabble, giving them a competitive edge. He encouraged other schools to embrace the game and consider coaching sessions.

The head teacher of St Catherine Junior School, Ms Annette Mutyaba, expressed her delight in her school’s performance and emphasized the importance of participating in mind games for overall cognitive development. Candidate Master, Fide trainer, and five-time Olympiad, Mr Ronald Lwebuga, praised the diverse representation of schools in the chess competition, noting the benefits of chess in developing critical thinking and discipline among young players.

Despite a lower turn-out than expected, Doreen Nakitto, the inspector of schools in Mukono municipality, stressed the importance of continued participation in such competitions. She emphasized the need for schools and parents to support and encourage students to engage in sports activities. Nakitto mentioned plans for a swimming pool and stadium in the municipality to facilitate such events in the future.

In conclusion, the competitions at St Catherine Junior School were deemed a success, providing a platform for students to showcase their talents in mind games and swimming. The event highlighted the benefits of engaging in sports and mind games for academic and personal development, encouraging schools to prioritize such activities for their students’ holistic growth.
