Ambassador Abbi Bachraya Bachir, the representative of the Polisario Front in Switzerland and at the United Nations, has issued a stark warning about potential legal actions that could be taken on an international level if Spain continues to support Morocco’s expansionist agenda in Western Sahara. Bachir highlighted the possibility of pursuing legal action in the European Court of Justice as a response to Spain’s backing of Morocco’s ambitions in the region.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Algeria International, Bachir emphasized that not only has the Spanish government politically endorsed Morocco’s aspirations, but it has also provided legal mechanisms to legitimize the occupation and annexation of Western Sahara. He pointed to the displacement of the Saharawi population in the Occupied Areas as a result of Morocco’s persistent settlement policy and the illegal exploitation of resources in the region.
Regarding the potential transfer of airspace management in the occupied zones, Bachir noted the lack of official confirmation, but highlighted Spain’s abandonment of its historical responsibility towards the Saharawi people since March 2022. This abandonment was evidenced by a letter from President Pedro Sanchez to the King of Morocco, in which he expressed support for the autonomy proposal for Western Sahara.
Bachir stressed that Spain’s stance not only jeopardizes stability in the Maghreb region but also goes against the rulings of the EU Court of Justice, which recognize the separation between Morocco and Western Sahara and grant exclusive sovereignty to the Saharawi people represented by the Polisario Front.
In the midst of this conflict involving Spain as an administering power, the Frente POLISARIO is calling on the Spanish government to reassess its position and refrain from aligning with Morocco in the EU Court of Justice. This alignment would help safeguard the rights of Western Sahara in trade and fisheries agreements with the European Union.
The warnings and calls for action from the Polisario Front underscore the increasing tensions in the region and the urgent need for a resolution that upholds the rights and self-determination of the Saharawi people. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community will be closely watching how Spain navigates its support for Morocco in light of the legal and political implications for Western Sahara.
