On February 29, 2024, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir addressed the economic hardships facing his country, attributing them to the ongoing war in neighboring Sudan. Speaking at the inauguration of the 22nd and 23rd batches of the South Sudan National Police Service in Juba, Kiir emphasized the crucial role of the police in enforcing laws, protecting civilians, and upholding professionalism.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the police force, Kiir highlighted the impact of the war on the country’s oil pipelines. He noted that the pipelines were not running smoothly due to leaks and blockages in the Red Sea caused by conflicts involving Israel, Palestine, and the Houthis in Yemen. These disruptions were not only affecting the operation of oil pipelines but also disrupting international shipping routes, further exacerbating the economic hardships faced by South Sudan.
As the country prepares for upcoming elections, President Kiir urged the police force to remain resilient and maintain a positive relationship with the civilian population. He emphasized their responsibility to provide security, protect property, and ensure the safety of the ballot and ballot boxes during the electoral process.
Interior Minister Angelina Teny highlighted the constitutional importance of safety and security for all citizens, underscoring the critical role of the police in upholding these principles. Inspector General of Police Gen. Atem Marol Biar urged the newly inaugurated cadets to work collaboratively with their leaders as agents of change.
The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the First Vice President, Vice Presidents, and the governor of the Central Bank, showcasing the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges facing the country. Despite acknowledging the severity of the situation, specific strategies to tackle the economic challenges were not disclosed during the event.
In conclusion, President Kiir’s address shed light on the interconnectedness of regional conflicts and their impact on South Sudan’s economy. The police force plays a crucial role in maintaining stability, ensuring security, and upholding the rule of law in the face of challenging circumstances. As the country navigates through upcoming elections and economic difficulties, collaboration and resilience among all stakeholders will be essential in overcoming the obstacles ahead.
