April 2, 2024 (JUBA) – A prominent South Sudanese lawmaker and ruling party member, Atem Garang de Kuek, recently addressed concerns about Sudan potentially breaking apart due to the ongoing war. As a former deputy speaker of Sudan’s national assembly, De Kuek expressed his belief that while the country may face significant instability, he does not foresee complete disintegration.

De Kuek acknowledged the history of disorder in some regions of Sudan and the potential for this instability to spill over into South Sudan. However, he clarified that this does not necessarily mean Sudan will cease to exist as a unified entity. He emphasized the interconnected nature of security, economy, and other factors between the two countries, highlighting the importance of cooperation among South Sudanese political forces.

In his statement, De Kuek raised questions about the current government’s approach to addressing the challenges facing the region and urged for more inclusivity in decision-making processes. He called for unity among marginalized political forces to work towards finding solutions for Sudan, suggesting that a collaborative effort would lead to a more receptive government.

Proposing the establishment of a “centre for strategic thinking” in South Sudan, De Kuek highlighted the need for a dedicated group of individuals focused on resolving complex issues. He identified a lack of trust in the government and noted that some citizens even viewed the British colonial era more positively, underscoring the importance of rebuilding confidence in governance structures.

These discussions took place during an event in Juba organized by South Sudanese journalist Mathiang Cirrilo, which brought together former officials who had served in the pre-secession unity government. The gathering aimed to leverage the insights of individuals familiar with Sudanese political dynamics, including military, paramilitary forces, and civilian leaders, to pursue a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

This dialogue forms part of a series initiated by South Sudanese journalists and activists, who are committed to finding solutions to the conflict in Sudan. Recognizing the significant impact of the conflict on South Sudan’s economy, security, and political stability, these efforts are crucial for addressing the root causes of instability in the region. South Sudan’s heavy reliance on oil exports, which flow through Sudan to reach the international market, further underscores the interconnectedness of the two nations’ fates.

In conclusion, De Kuek’s remarks underscore the importance of cooperation, strategic thinking, and inclusive governance in navigating the complex challenges facing Sudan and South Sudan. By fostering dialogue, building trust, and seeking collaborative solutions, stakeholders can work towards a more stable and prosperous future for both countries.
