The Twic East Community recently gathered for the Twic East Community Global Conference in Panyagor, Jonglei State, from March 10 to March 15, 2024. During this conference, a groundbreaking decision was made to reduce the traditional bride price in order to address societal challenges and promote better community cohesion.
One of the key resolutions that emerged from the conference was the establishment of a fixed optimal acceptable dowry for a bride. It was decided that the maximum acceptable dowry would be set at thirty (30) heads of cattle or their monetary equivalent. This significant reduction from previous customary practices was intended to alleviate financial burdens on families and facilitate easier marriages, particularly among the younger generation.
The newly established dowry of 30 cows also includes various traditional items such as aping, thooc, adhukwuiin, biol, and wengeer. Additionally, the resolution stipulated that the transfer of cattle or its monetary equivalent would take effect upon the completion of marriage negotiations (Lei), and any delays from the girl’s side after this negotiation would be the responsibility of her family.
Moreover, the resolution emphasized that each unit of cattle must not be accompanied by cash (athuat), and any compensation for delays or losses due to delays would be borne by the girl’s family. This provision aimed to ensure fairness and equity in the marriage negotiations process.
The decision to reduce the traditional bride price was met with enthusiasm and support from the Twic East Community. Many participants at the conference viewed this change as a positive step towards promoting unity and cooperation within the community, as well as addressing some of the financial challenges that families face in arranging marriages.
Overall, the Twic East Community Global Conference marked a significant milestone in the community’s efforts to adapt traditional customs to meet the evolving needs of its members. By reducing the bride price and introducing new guidelines for marriage negotiations, the community took a proactive step towards creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for its members.
Moving forward, the Twic East Community is committed to upholding the decisions made at the conference and ensuring that these changes are implemented effectively and equitably. Through ongoing dialogue and collaboration, the community aims to continue addressing societal challenges and fostering a stronger sense of unity and cooperation among its members.
