A soldier has been arrested for a shooting incident that occurred in Mapau area along Juba – Bor Highway, involving his neighbor on Wednesday evening. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a case of child abuse. The victim, Deng Ayiei, was shot in the head after a neighbor allegedly beat a child who then sought refuge in Deng’s house.

According to witnesses, when the people in Deng’s house intervened to stop the neighbor from beating the child, the neighbor grew angry and went back to inform his relative, who happened to be a soldier, that they were being confronted by their neighbors. This led to a confrontation and eventually resulted in Deng being shot.

Agany Malleher, a cousin of the victim, narrated the events by stating, “The woman of the house told them that when you beat the child and the child runs away from you, you shouldn’t continue beating the child. Because they weren’t allowed to continue beating the child, that guy went back and informed the relatives that the neighbors were fighting them.” It was highlighted that the suspect, who is identified as Marial and is an army officer, was not the one who initially beat the child but reacted to the situation based on the information provided.

Currently, the focus is on ensuring the health and well-being of the victim. Deng Ayiei is undergoing medical scanning at Juba Medical Center, with plans to transfer him to Juba Teaching Hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, the suspect, Marial, is in detention under the military police due to his status as a soldier. Agany emphasized that their immediate priority is the recovery of the victim, and legal proceedings will be pursued accordingly.

Speaking on the incident, Lt. Col. Daniel Mabior Garang, a military police officer in Juba, stated, “the cause of the accident is not yet investigated, but our prime aim was to intervene and break the fight. I took the victim to the hospital and brought the accused to the jail. We shall find out what happened afterwards.” The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and appropriate actions will be taken once the facts are established.

The community is shocked by the unfortunate turn of events and is hopeful for a swift and just resolution to the matter. It serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing conflicts peacefully and avoiding resorting to violence in any situation. The focus remains on supporting Deng Ayiei in his recovery and ensuring that justice is served for the incident that took place in Mapau area.
