South Africa’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Naledi Pandor, has recently voiced her country’s support for the European Court of Justice’s decisions concerning the appeals made by the Polisario Front. These decisions emphasized the legitimacy of the Polisario Front’s representation of the Saharawi people and questioned the legality of agreements between the European Union and Morocco that encompass Western Sahara.
In a conference held at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Dr. Pandor reiterated the call for all UN member states to enhance their efforts in ensuring the just rights of both the Saharawi and Palestinian people. She also criticized Morocco for its human rights violations and its denial of access to the Human Rights Commission in the occupied territories.
The Minister highlighted South Africa’s unwavering support for the Saharawi people in their pursuit of freedom and independence. She condemned Morocco’s inappropriate diplomatic maneuvers, including the baseless campaign against South Africa and the UN envoy, Staffan de Mistura, following discussions on the Western Sahara matter in Pretoria.
Amidst the condemnation of Moroccan actions, South Africa continued to show its solidarity with the Saharawi people and emphasized the importance of upholding human rights and self-determination. Dr. Pandor urged the international community not to remain silent in the face of violations in Western Sahara and stressed the significance of commemorating the 77th anniversary of the UN Charter as a reminder of the obligation to adhere to human rights principles set by international law and UN resolutions.
As the Saharawi Republic marks another year, it stands as an established and irreversible reality. South Africa called on the African Union to urgently address the Saharawi matter and appealed to the international community to unite in the fight for decolonization and self-determination. The Minister’s statements reaffirm South Africa’s commitment to supporting the Saharawi cause and advocating for justice and respect for human rights in the region.
