During his three-day visit to South Sudan, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep concern about the worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan, particularly highlighting the impact of the ongoing conflict and its spill-over effects to neighboring countries. Ramaphosa emphasized the destabilizing nature of the crisis, warning of its potential to affect the entire region.
Speaking about the conflict in Sudan, President Ramaphosa stated, “South Africa is deeply concerned about the conflict and its resulting humanitarian catastrophe, which is spilling over to neighbouring countries.” This statement reflects the seriousness with which South Africa views the situation and its commitment to finding a resolution.
In his speech, Ramaphosa also pledged support for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a regional bloc focused on economic development, security, and peaceful relations in eastern Africa. Since April 2023, IGAD has been actively working to bring an end to hostilities in Sudan, secure a ceasefire, and facilitate the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict.
“We support the role of IGAD and the African Union in resolving the conflict in Sudan,” Ramaphosa affirmed. “We urge them to intensify their efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region.” This statement underscores South Africa’s commitment to supporting regional initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability.
While President Ramaphosa did not specify South Africa’s direct role in the conflict, his visit to South Sudan highlights the country’s dedication to finding a solution as the current chair of the African Union’s High-Level Ad-hoc Committee for South Sudan. South Africa’s involvement in regional conflicts extends beyond Sudan, as the country is also a guarantor of the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), which seeks to bring an end to the long-running civil war in that country.
As a key player in regional peace and security efforts, South Africa’s support for initiatives like IGAD and the AU demonstrates its commitment to promoting stability and prosperity in Africa. By advocating for peaceful resolutions to conflicts and supporting efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need, South Africa is playing a vital role in addressing the complex challenges facing the continent.
President Ramaphosa’s visit to South Sudan serves as a testament to South Africa’s continued engagement in regional affairs and its commitment to finding sustainable solutions to conflicts that threaten peace and stability. Through its involvement in initiatives like IGAD and the R-ARCSS, South Africa is actively working towards a more peaceful and prosperous future for the region.
