The University of Fort Hare has been embroiled in a series of murders and corruption scandals that have thrust Vice-Chancellor Professor Sakhela Buhlungu into the spotlight over the past 18 months. The first murder of an employee, Petrus Roets, in May 2022, was followed by the tragic killing of Buhlungu’s bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele, in January 2023. These murders have been linked to a tender corruption syndicate that has plagued the institution and cost millions of rands.

In an exclusive interview, Buhlungu shared his crusade for justice and closure for the families of the victims, as well as his efforts to bring the guilty parties to justice. Despite scaling back his public exposure, Buhlungu remains active on campus, supporting students and staff through challenging times.

The arrests made in connection with the murders include a fellow police officer, a local businessman, a lawyer, university employees, and hitmen from KwaZulu-Natal. The investigation into these crimes goes back to 2017 when Buhlungu first joined the university and discovered factions, thieves, and mafia leaders operating within the institution.

The murders of Roets and Vesele marked a turning point in Buhlungu’s tenure, leading to heightened security measures and a renewed commitment to uncovering the truth behind the crimes. Despite initial setbacks and lack of cooperation from the authorities, Buhlungu’s persistence eventually led to breakthrough arrests and a renewed sense of hope for justice.

The involvement of key university personnel in the crimes, including Isaac Plaatjies, the head of vetting and investigations, came as a shock to Buhlungu. Plaatjies’ arrest and subsequent dismissal shed light on the extent of corruption and betrayal within the institution.

As the case unfolds in court, Buhlungu remains vigilant and committed to seeing justice served. The support of the community, students, and staff has been a source of strength for him during these challenging times. Through initiatives like the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup soccer competition and campus tours, Buhlungu has worked to rebuild trust and unity within the university.

Despite the personal toll and challenges he has faced, Buhlungu remains dedicated to his mission of upholding justice and integrity at the University of Fort Hare. The ongoing investigation and legal proceedings continue to unravel the intricate web of corruption and greed that has tarnished the institution’s reputation.

As Buhlungu navigates the complex dynamics of power and corruption, he remains resolute in his pursuit of truth and accountability. The events of the past two years have tested his resolve, but his unwavering commitment to justice and integrity shines through the darkness of betrayal and deceit.
