The Happening festival in Melville brought together poetry, music, visual art, and a lively carnival atmosphere, all against the backdrop of mutant cars cruising the streets. Melville, a space known for its creative energy and laid-back vibe, contrasts with the hustle and bustle of the rest of Joburg.

Before the pandemic, Melville was thriving with popular establishments like Hell’s Kitchen and La Santa Muerte, although some have sadly closed their doors. However, iconic spots like Xai Xai and Book Dealers continue to offer their unique charm to the community.

The Happening festival, inspired by AfrikaBurn’s ethos of noncommercialism, transformed 7th street into a car-free zone where families could roam freely and enjoy a variety of arts and performances. Organized by Walter Böhmer, the festival aimed to revitalize the community spirit in Melville and bring back the vibrant energy the suburb was known for.

Local artists and musicians took center stage at The Happening, with spoken word sessions, jazz performances, quirky cars, colorful costumes, and a mix of musical genres delighting festival-goers. The spirit of gifting, borrowed from AfrikaBurn’s philosophy, encouraged participants to share their talents and creativity with the community without expecting monetary compensation.

The festival also featured market stalls where artists could sell their crafts, ensuring that the event remained true to its noncommercial ethos. The collaborative efforts of the community in preparing and decorating the street for the festival demonstrated the spirit of unity and creativity that Melville embodies.

Highlights of the festival included a saxophonist playing beautiful tunes on the street, a teen punk band performing on a balcony, and a parade showcasing dancers and decorated cars. The sense of spontaneity, creativity, and community spirit was palpable throughout the event, leaving a lasting impact on both participants and attendees.

The success of The Happening festival in Melville has inspired hope for future events that celebrate art, music, and community connections. The revival of Melville’s creative spirit through initiatives like this festival reflects the resilience and passion of the community in preserving the unique character of this vibrant suburb.
