Mamelodi Sundowns have once again secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the Caf Champions League for the sixth consecutive season. They are among the elite African teams vying for the prestigious title, including Al Ahly, ASEC Mimosas, Espérance, Simba, Yanga, Petro Atletico, and TP Mazembe.
The draw for the quarterfinal match-ups is set to take place on 12 March in Cairo, Egypt. Notably absent from the draw will be three-time Champions League winners Wydad Casablanca, who were unable to qualify after finishing third in their group behind ASEC and Simba.
Despite their success in the group stages in recent seasons, Sundowns have experienced setbacks in the knockout rounds. In the 2021/2022 season, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Angola’s Petro Atletico. The following season, they made it to the semifinals but were knocked out by Wydad Casablanca on away goals despite remaining undefeated throughout the competition.
In the current campaign, Sundowns have already suffered a defeat in the group stages, losing 1-0 to TP Mazembe in December. This loss has served as a wake-up call for the team, reminding them that they are not invincible despite their impressive unbeaten streak in the DStv Premiership.
Head coach Rulani Mokwena acknowledges the importance of a systematic approach and a bit of luck in achieving success in the Champions League. He pointed to the example of Ivory Coast’s unexpected triumph in the Africa Cup of Nations as a reminder that anything is possible in football.
Mokwena remains optimistic about Sundowns’ chances in the current season, emphasizing the club’s ambitions for global dominance. Winning the Champions League would secure their qualification for FIFA’s expanded 32-team Club World Cup, a milestone that the club is actively working towards.
As they navigate their African and global ambitions, Sundowns are taking each game as it comes, learning from past defeats and striving for excellence on the pitch. With a talented squad and a determined coaching staff, the Brazilians are aiming to reclaim the Champions League title that has eluded them in recent years.
The journey towards African glory and global recognition is a challenging one, but Mamelodi Sundowns are ready to face the competition head-on and make their mark on the world stage.
