National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has commended the team that successfully thwarted a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in Dobsonville, Soweto on Saturday evening. The police received information about a planned CIT robbery and proceeded to the active scene in Dobsonville. As a result of their swift action, the suspects were intercepted before they could carry out their plan to bomb a CIT cash van. Upon arrival at the scene, SAPS members were met with gunfire from the suspects, and in response, the members returned fire, resulting in the fatal wounding of two suspects. Additionally, the police recovered an R5 rifle, three AK47s, and three vehicles that were used in the commission of the crime.
General Masemola has expressed the police’s commitment to dealing decisively with serious and violent crime. He stated, “Our intelligence operators are on the ground, our teams are on high alert. We cannot allow criminals to rule. It’s either them or us, our focus is to ensure the safety and security of law-abiding citizens. We will continue to sharpen our focus and clamp down on serious and violent crime with the aim of apprehending and successfully convicting those behind CIT crimes in the country.” The police have also launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects who fled the scene on foot, urging anyone with information to contact the Dobsonville Police Station.
In a separate incident in KwaZulu-Natal, a tragic event unfolded as a father shot and killed his wife and three-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself in Pipeclay, Phoenix on Saturday. Members of KZNVIP responded to the scene of the shooting, where initial reports indicated multiple gunshots followed by a female’s cries for help. Upon arrival, KZNVIP encountered traumatised community members who had witnessed the horrific incident. Additional Response Units and VIP medics were called in to provide assistance.
These two events serve as a stark reminder of the prevalence of violent crime in South Africa. While the police work tirelessly to protect and serve the communities, it is crucial for citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or information that could aid in combating crime. The tragic loss of life in the Pipeclay incident is a stark reminder of the importance of mental health support and intervention in communities to prevent such senseless acts of violence.
In conclusion, the police’s vigilant efforts in foiling the CIT robbery in Dobsonville demonstrate their dedication to maintaining law and order. However, the community’s cooperation and support are equally vital in ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. Together, with a collective effort, it is possible to combat and reduce the occurrence of serious and violent crimes in the country.
