Six individuals have been apprehended and detained in relation to the tragic murders of South African rapper AKA, also known as Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, and his former manager and friend, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. Police Minister Bheki Cele made the announcement on Tuesday night during a press conference at the South African Police Service (SAPS) headquarters in Durban. The suspects were scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, although the specific court was not disclosed.
Forbes, 35, and Motsoane were fatally shot on Florida Road in Morningside, Durban, on February 10, 2023. The incident occurred outside the Wish on Florida restaurant as the two men were heading to their car. They were approached by two armed individuals who shot them at close range. The entire incident was captured on CCTV footage and shared widely on social media.
During the press conference, KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi provided further details on the case. He revealed that the six suspects played various roles in the operation, including the coordinator, two shooters, two spotters, and the organizer of firearms and vehicles. Some of the suspects were linked to other murder cases, indicating a pattern of criminal behavior.
The SAPS managed to recover four vehicles, a firearm, and cartridges from the crime scene that were linked to another shooting. Mkhwanazi highlighted the timeline of the arrests, showcasing the meticulous investigative work that led to the apprehension of the suspects. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that all individuals involved in the crime were brought to justice.
AKA was a highly regarded hip-hop artist with a successful career that was tragically cut short by his murder. His untimely death came less than two years after the passing of his fiancée, Anele “Nellie” Tembe, under mysterious circumstances. The unresolved nature of Tembe’s death added to the complexity and intrigue surrounding AKA’s murder investigation.
Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola called for swift action in arresting and prosecuting those responsible for the murders. The timeline of arrests provided by Mkhwanazi demonstrated the dedicated efforts of law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The motive behind the murders remains unknown, and additional suspects may be added to the investigation as it progresses. Mkhwanazi emphasized that there is substantial evidence linking the suspects to the crime, creating a solid case for prosecution. The intricate details of the operation and the roles played by each individual shed light on the premeditated nature of the crime.
As the investigation continues, the South African community mourns the loss of AKA and Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. The arrests of the suspects provide a glimmer of hope for closure and justice for the victims and their loved ones. The country waits in anticipation for the legal proceedings to unfold and for the truth behind the tragic murders to come to light.
