As the election approaches, the African National Congress (ANC) is facing a unique and challenging situation unlike any it has faced before. The party is encountering opposition from various directions, including a party led by its former leader Jacob Zuma, and is under attack from both the left and the right. The electorate has grown weary of unfulfilled promises and there is widespread evidence of the ANC’s failures, with young people struggling to find employment, dilapidated roads and water systems, and ongoing issues with energy supply.

Despite President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation promise to hold those responsible for corruption to account, there is little evidence to suggest that he intends to follow through. Several individuals implicated in corruption cases have been retained in key positions within the party, despite findings against them by the Zondo Commission and Parliament. This has raised questions about the ANC’s commitment to combating corruption within its own ranks.

The ANC’s Integrity Commission has promised disciplinary processes for nearly one hundred individuals involved in corruption, but so far, very few have gone through such processes. This has led to doubts about the ANC’s sincerity in addressing corruption issues. The party faces a challenge in regaining the trust of the public and living up to its promises.

Despite these challenges, the ANC may resort to making populist promises in a bid to win votes, such as the introduction of a basic income grant and the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill. However, financial constraints and lack of evidence to back up these promises may make it difficult for the ANC to fulfill them.

Furthermore, concerns over rising racial tensions and inequality in the country may influence the election narrative. Previous campaigns have often been influenced by race, and it is likely to play a significant role in the upcoming election. Former President Jacob Zuma and EFF leader Julius Malema are expected to focus on race-based issues, which may impact the election dynamics. However, the emergence of new parties with diverse ideologies could potentially weaken the influence of race-based issues on the ANC’s electoral performance.

Despite these challenges, the ANC possesses a powerful campaign machinery and resources that will help it convey its message to voters. However, the party also faces scrutiny and criticism from its opponents. The ANC’s ability to address issues of corruption and service delivery may determine its success in setting the election narrative and winning the trust of voters.

In conclusion, the ANC faces a complex and multi-faceted challenge leading up to the election. It must address concerns related to issues of corruption, service delivery, and fulfill its promises to regain the trust of the public. Additionally, it must navigate racial dynamics and rising opposition from various parties and voters with diverse ideologies. The party’s ability to address these challenges will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the election.
