During the matric results announcement ceremony at the MTN headquarters in Johannesburg, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga revealed that 740,566 learners out of the 1.2 million learners who enrolled for Grade 1 in 2012 went through the entire Basic Education system until matric in 2023. However, for reasons not stated by the minister, a total of 24,847 learners who reached matric did not enroll for the NSC exams.

“In October 2023, 715,719 candidates enrolled for the 2023 NSC exams,” says Motshekga. She also took the time to honor and commend the matric class of 2023 for their resilience and determination, especially in light of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Motshekga highlighted that the 2023 matric class had to endure the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Grades 9 and 10 in 2020 and 2021, remarking on their ability to cope during those difficult years as a testament to their fortitude and determination. She also noted that these learners had to adapt to measures such as social distancing and alternating class schedules, which further showcased their commitment to their education.

In terms of special cases, only 10 young people in correctional facilities who wrote the matric exams failed, with 137 passing. Among those who passed, 90 obtained Bachelor passes, 34 obtained Diploma passes, and 13 obtained Higher Certificate passes. Motshekga revealed that 93.2% of the full-time candidates in correctional facilities who wrote the 2023 NSC exams passed, and a total of 278 distinctions were attained by these young people.

The ceremony also recognized and celebrated some of the top-achieving learners in the matric class of 2023. Overall, Motshekga’s remarks underscored the accomplishments and resilience of the 2023 matric class, emphasizing their determination and ability to overcome significant challenges on their educational journey.
