In the 2023 National Senior Certificate matric result announcement, Minister of Education Angie Motshekga revealed that none of the nine provinces in South Africa recorded a decline in their matric results compared to the previous year. This is a positive trend, as it indicates growth and improvement in the education system across the country.
Motshekga noted that all provinces achieved a pass rate of over 75%, with very small percentage gap pass rates between provinces. For example, the pass rate gap between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng is only 1%, while the North West, Western Cape, and the Eastern Cape differ by only 0.1%. These minimal differences in pass rates demonstrate a more balanced and consistent performance in the education system, as opposed to portraying certain provinces, districts, or schools as centers of dysfunctionality.
The Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng were announced as the three best-performing provinces, with Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape as the lowest performing provinces. Despite this, both the lowest performing provinces showed improvement, with increases of 0.2% and 1.6%, respectively.
The Free State achieved the highest pass rate at 89.093%, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 86.4% and Gauteng at 85.4%. The North West, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape also achieved pass rates above 80%, with Limpopo showing the most improvement at 79.5%.
Overall, the 2023 National Senior Certificate achieved a pass rate of 82.9%, an improvement of 2.8 percentage points from the previous year. This represents 572,983 candidates who passed the exams. Minister Motshekga commended the class of 2023 for maintaining the trend of improvement despite the challenges they faced in achieving these results.
The announcement of consistently high pass rates and improvements across all provinces is a testament to the dedication and hard work of students, educators, and the education department as a whole in South Africa. It highlights the progress being made in the country’s education system, providing hope for the future advancement and success of students.
