Former Police Minister Nathi Nhleko, known for his involvement in the Nkandla scandal, has made the decision to resign from the African National Congress (ANC). This decision came after a public dispute with party secretary general Fikile Mbalula, who accused Nhleko of lying in parliament to defend former President Jacob Zuma during the Nkandla scandal inquiry. Nhleko expressed that the current values and principles of the ANC do not align with his own, leading to his resignation.
In a letter addressed to the Albertina Sisulu Branch secretary, Tolo Fakazi, Nhleko criticized Mbalula’s accusations and highlighted the deviation of the ANC from its founding principles. He mentioned concerns such as the privatization of state-owned enterprises, transfer of control to the private sector, and reduction of state influence in critical sectors, leading to job losses. Nhleko also criticized the shift towards austerity measures, impacting social spending and benefits like social grants for the elderly.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri confirmed Nhleko’s resignation, emphasizing his democratic right to do so. She defended Mbalula against Nhleko’s criticism and stated that the ANC had confidence in the secretary general’s leadership. Bhengu-Motsiri mentioned that Nhleko’s resignation was not out of the ordinary and that any member has the right to resign. She suggested that Nhleko should have addressed his concerns internally with the senior leadership before resigning.
Nhleko expressed disappointment in the internal dynamics of the ANC, noting that public disputes among leaders were damaging the party’s integrity. He highlighted the suffering of people in his community and across the country due to the organization’s failures, leading to his decision to step down. Nhleko praised his record of service, stating that he had fulfilled his duties to the best of his ability and commitment to the ANC.
During his tenure as police minister, Nhleko faced criticism for his alleged ties to former President Zuma and involvement in questionable activities, such as funding a union to rival existing associations. The auditor general also highlighted issues with financial management and governance under Nhleko’s leadership.
