President Cyril Ramaphosa is currently in Kampala, Uganda, to attend the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit, which comprises 120 member nations primarily consisting of developing countries not aligned with major international blocs. The main topics of discussion at the meeting include international governance, human rights, and the Israel-Hamas war.

President Ramaphosa views the NAM as a politically robust movement with progressive, political, and ideological adherences. He states, “We’ve been united on many issues but especially on the promotion of multilateralism.”

As the outgoing chair of the group, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, reflected on the country’s four-year tenure and its role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlights the transformation of pandemic-related challenges into intercooperation opportunities.

The Non-Aligned Movement is seeking to assert itself more on global issues, with the week-long summit expected to conclude with the adoption of the Kampala Final Outcome Document and a declaration on the crisis in Gaza. There has been a collective condemnation of the violence in the Gaza Strip, with Chairperson African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, stating, “Africa condemns this unacceptable, immoral, and illegal humanitarian furore and demands for the immediate end to the unjust war on the Palestinian people and for the immediate implementation of the two-state solution.”

Uganda is preparing to take over as the next chair of the NAM. President Yoweri Museveni is urging NAM members to define and prioritize issues that favor developing countries, emphasizing the strength of the NAM in exercising considerable influence, particularly at the UN, for a better common future.

The priorities for the NAM under Uganda’s chairmanship will include international peace and security, as well as dealing with humanitarian crises. The conclusion of the summit is expected to reflect the growing desire from member nations for an equitable global governance system. The general consensus has been on the Israel-Palestine crisis, with a call for an immediate ceasefire.
