The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, recently visited several voter registration stations in Durban in an effort to mobilize voters ahead of the upcoming national elections. He stressed the importance of KwaZulu-Natal as a key province in this year’s elections and the need for voter participation. Malema’s visit comes as political parties are vying for potential votes in the second-largest province, which contributes 20% of the country’s votes after Gauteng, according to the latest IEC statistics.

During his visit, Malema spoke about the significance of KwaZulu-Natal in determining the outcome of the 2024 elections, emphasizing that the province would be a battleground for political parties. He expressed confidence in the EFF’s ability to make inroads in KwaZulu-Natal, stating that the party is committed to securing the number one spot in the elections.

The visit to voting stations also provided Malema with the opportunity to engage with eligible voters who expressed concerns about poor service delivery in their communities. Nkosikhona Masoka, Themba Mthombeni, and Nomvelo Shabane, all first-time voters, highlighted the lack of job opportunities, inadequate infrastructure, and scarce resources in their areas. They emphasized the need for a party that is committed to addressing these challenges and improving the lives of young people.

Malema acknowledged the challenges faced by these voters and reiterated the EFF’s commitment to creating job opportunities, improving infrastructure, and delivering basic services to underserved communities. He also addressed the emergence of political competitors in the province, stating that the EFF was focused on securing the number one position in the elections and was not concerned about other parties.

The voter registration process in KwaZulu-Natal is ongoing, with voting stations open from 8am to 5pm on Sundays to facilitate registration. The EFF has been actively encouraging eligible voters to participate in the registration process and has been mobilizing support for the party in the province.

The visit to voting stations in Durban underscores the EFF’s strategic efforts to engage with voters and garner support in KwaZulu-Natal. Malema’s presence at the stations and his interactions with voters have highlighted the party’s commitment to addressing the needs and concerns of the province’s residents. As the 2024 elections approach, political parties are intensifying their efforts to secure votes and make their mark in key provinces like KwaZulu-Natal. The visit by Malema and the EFF’s focus on voter mobilization exemplify the significance of the province in shaping the political landscape of South Africa.
