Former State Security Minister David Mahlobo recently testified at the Zondo Commission, shedding light on the state capture cloud that has been hanging over him. Despite facing pushback and opposition from various groups, Mahlobo has been given the green light to serve in the ANC’s national structure.

Mahlobo’s name was included in the list of candidates submitted to the Electoral Commission of South Africa, ranking at number 13 out of 200 names. When questioned about his candidacy at an ANC media briefing, Mahlobo deflected the questions and preferred to focus on more pressing issues such as the water crisis.

The former minister has been implicated in the state capture saga, with evidence suggesting that he received large amounts of cash during his tenure as state security minister. It was alleged that Mahlobo was part of a plan to advance the interests of former president Jacob Zuma. However, Mahlobo has vehemently denied these claims.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, who presided over the state capture commission, found the evidence against Mahlobo to be quite detailed and overwhelming. He recommended further investigation by law enforcement agencies and the possibility of criminal charges being brought against Mahlobo by the National Prosecuting Authority.

Despite the controversy surrounding him, Mahlobo has been vocal about addressing the water crisis in various parts of the country. He acknowledged the challenges faced by residents, especially in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, where water shortages have been prevalent.

In Johannesburg, residents have experienced water outages lasting up to two weeks due to power outages at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station. Mahlobo explained that maintenance teams were working to address the issue, with technical teams monitoring the system twice a day to minimize water losses.

Mahlobo highlighted the need for significant investments in water infrastructure to reduce losses and ensure consistent water supply. He emphasized the importance of communication from municipal leaders to keep the public informed about the water crisis and urged residents to use water sparingly.

As Mahlobo continues to navigate the challenges of public office, he remains committed to addressing critical issues such as the water crisis while also facing scrutiny and opposition from various quarters. His tenure in the ANC’s national structure will be closely monitored as he works towards rebuilding trust and addressing the pressing needs of the people.
